Our Sicily photography tour in Spring 2026 is one of contrasts. Dividing our time between the island capital, Palermo, and Agrigento to the south, we’ll sample two faces of the island - the bustle and colour of Italian city life, as well as the tranquil, flower-filled groves that perfectly frame the ancient Greek ruins of the Valley of the Temples. Sicily in this early part of the year is a travel photographer’s dream. The summer season tourists have yet to arrive, so it will be the locals we’ll encounter in the streets of Palermo, and our countryside adventure will show us fresh green meadows thriving in the pleasant warmth of the spring sunshine.

We’ll begin among the incredible colour of the many markets, streets, churches, cafes and stunning Norman/Arab/Byzantine architecture of Palermo - a city that has retained its strong character and culture, and which displays it powerfully at every turn. The famous street markets offer us the chance to step back in time and to wonder at the size, vibrancy and quality of the fish, fruit and vegetables, as well as to hear the sing-song din of the vendors declaring the advantages of their wares. We’ll see where the fish come in too, and photograph the fishermen selling their catch on the harbour side against a backdrop of a vast variety of boats. And if you are a fan of The Godfather trilogy you’ll be able to see the spot where the tragic finale played out on the steps of the magnificent Teatro Massimo. You might be able to get a Don Coreleone fridge magnet too.

Palermo has cafes, bars and restaurants everywhere you look, and while we obviously will be there to take pictures, the food is spectacularly good and so much is specific to the island – such as the Arancini rice balls stuffed with all kinds of deliciousness, and fashioned like hot oranges.

Our second destination is the quite incredible Valley of the Temples just outside Agrigento – a two hour train ride along the coast and across the Sicilian countryside from Palermo. Valle dei Templi in Italian, this UNESCO World Heritage Site holds some of the best preserved ancient Greek architecture to be seen anywhere in the world. The remains of seven temples, some brilliantly complete, can be seen across what is the largest archaeological site in Europe, as well as a host of other buildings, pillars, and even fragments of frescos and mosaics. While the largest temple, the 5th century BC Temple of Concordia, draws all the attention, there are also parts of the park where you’ll find yourself alone in a grassy meadow with the ghosts of former inhabitants and the kitchens, baths and stonework they left behind. The early sunset of spring will find most of the visitors gone home leaving us to craft unforgettable images free from too many distractions. We’ll stay near the site so we can take our time and absorb all there is to see and photograph.

This will be a fantastically memorable trip and you’ll come home with an incredibly wide range of pictures, from travel shots, to landscape and, of course, architecture. Andiamo!
