Our Porto travel photography tour will take place in September 2026 and will be led by Damien Demolder.
The river Douro twists and turns for over 550 miles through the cities and mountainous landscapes of Northern Spain before slicing the top third of Portugal from the main body of the country. Navigable as it crosses the border, its fast flowing waters have been used for centuries to transport vast quantities of wine from the Douro Valley vineyards west towards Foz do Douro where the river finally spills into the North Atlantic. Forming a guard of honour for the grand finale of this epic journey are the six magnificent bridges of Porto spanning the Douro one after the other, announcing in some style the last civilised landing point before the sea is reached.

Porto Photography Tour - Six Bridges, A Few Barrels Of Wine And Sunset Views To Die For
Double-decked and constructed with iron and granite, the dramatically arched Dom Luis l bridge is the most famous of those six bridges, and has become an icon of this splendid city. Designed by a pupil of Gustave Eiffel of the Eiffel Tower fame, its two levels allow pedestrians, cars, taxis, cyclists and even Metro train passengers to cross the river from the main city centre to Vila Nova de Gaia – the home of the numerous port lodges belonging to famous houses such as Cockburns, Taylors, Grahams and Poҫas.

No visit to this historic UNESCO World Heritage Site would be complete without a chance to photograph the gigantic barrels of port aging in these lodges or indeed the chance to taste what’s inside, just as no visit to Porto would be complete without a chance to shoot the bridges and picturesque buildings on either bank from the river itself. We’ll take a trip on the river alongside the traditional Rabelos that were used to transport wine along the river to this resting spot, and we’ll visit a port lodge and hopefully see the last remaining coppers mending their barrels before sampling the delights those barrels contained.

An important settlement even for the Romans in the 2nd century BC, Porto is the second most important of Portugal’s cities after Lisbon. Invaded, occupied and liberated time and again, the history of the city is illustrated through its architecture, cuisine and inhabitants, each element of which provides a fascinating visual spectacle for the eyes as well as the camera.
During our trip, we’ll discover the decorative tile-clad exteriors of churches and houses, the vast and colourful daily market, the stunning riverside architecture as well as some incredible sunset views of the iconic Douro framed by its bridges. We’ll take our time as we move around the city and work each opportunity to explore all the possible angles and to ensure we come home with some stunning images and some fantastic memories.
