Our Glasgow photography workshop will take place in September and will be led by Peter Fenech.

Glasgow is not only Scotland’s biggest and busiest city, but it is a centre for commerce, art, and culture. This great city was the home of the renowned architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and it plays host to some of the most important artistic collections in the UK. From a photographer’s perspective, meanwhile, the streets themselves have a timeless atmosphere that makes every turn an adventure written in colour, texture, and graphic shapes.

There is colour everywhere in Glasgow, from the graffiti found lining the banks of the River Clyde, to the gilded period signage of Central Station, and the modern glowing floodlights that make the now iconic Clyde Arc Bridge stand out against the twilight sky, reflections shimmering in the glassy waters of the river below.

Glasgow Photography Workshop - Scotland’s Metropolis
For our Glasgow photo workshop, our main focus will be on seeking out the places where worlds collide, and the signature 19th-century Victorian architecture contrasts against the Art Nouveau facades of the early 1900s and the contemporary glass and steel of the modern city. We’ll follow a fascinating trail through the bustling centre, from the energetic Hillhead neighbourhood in the west, to Merchant City in the east. We’ll explore the unique building style, which famously mirrors the tenements of old Manhattan in New York. In fact, the sandstone so acutely resembles the Beaux-Arts architecture of Glasgow’s transatlantic cousin that the area has become a go-to Hollywood filming location, most recently appearing in Spiderman: Brand New Day and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

From here, we’ll snake through the old city, and finally, along the river to catch abstracts using the evening light over the waters of the Clyde, which powered Glasgow’s industry and made it what it is today.

Prepare to be surprised and delighted by the enormous range of detail and styles Glasgow provides. It’s a place that demands repeat visits with your camera, but this workshop has been designed as the perfect introduction to this, Scotland’s beating heart.
