Our Spring Photography Tour to Donegal with Charlie Waite and Damien Demolder will take place in May and June.

Tucked away in the northwestern corner of Ireland, even the Irish say that County Donegal (Dún na nGall) is a long way from anywhere – and most haven’t been there. The mountainous landscape forms a glorious barrier to the rest of the world, so the county remains unspoilt, largely untouched, nicely out-of-reach and spectacularly beautiful. The north west of the county, where our tour will take place, features dramatic contrasts of rock, undulating green hills and rolling Atlantic Ocean. So unworldly is the landscape around Malin Head that it was chosen as a location for scenes in Star Wars – the strikingly rugged and dramatic rock formations were surely formed on another planet and dropped to Earth.

But the Donegal coast isn’t all hard edged rock. The county has some of the most beautiful beaches this side of the Caribbean, with fine white sands, windy dunes and lush backdrops painted with 40 shades of green. On this tour we’ll make the most of those beaches, that rolling green countryside as well as the rocky mountains, and we’ll visit some of the most visually spectacular landscapes Ireland has to offer.

Concentrating on the North and North West section of Donegal we’ll explore the Malin peninsular as it juts into the Atlantic Ocean, we’ll see where the forest runs down to the sea in Ards Forest Park and we’ll admire the majesty of Mount Erigal and Muckish Mountain from every direction, near and far. For castles and dramatic lakes we’ll spend a day roaming the protected landscape of The Glenveagh National Park, the Poisoned Glen and we’ll set the ruined church in Dunlewey against its stunning backdrop. You will have your breath taken away on more than one occasion on every day of this tour – and not only by the fresh Atlantic breezes!

As much as Donegal is famous for its greenery, the drama of the landscape will also suit those who prefer to work in monochrome, and fast-moving clouds and seas will present a delight for long shutter fans. The hourly rotation of each of the four seasons will mean we’ll never be bored, as conditions will change constantly and meaningfully to lend us a multitude of options without leaving the one spot.

In between our shutter clicks we’ll enjoy the warmth of the county’s hospitality, the freshness of the excellent seafood, the traditional music, as well, of course, as a drop or two of some of the finest ‘black stuff’ you’ll find anywhere. Donegal has a very strong sense of its own unique culture, its history and its language so you’ll see road signs in Gaeilge and hear it spoken on the local radio. And the only traffic jams we’ll encounter will involve sheep.
