Our Gothic Edinburgh photography workshop with Peter Fenech will take place in September.

Edinburgh is not only the capital city of Scotland, it is a brand in itself that represents Scottish identity. Its gothic spires and labyrinthine alleyways exude atmosphere and provide photographers with beautiful graphic shapes and textures to play with. The city is a contradiction of large and small, with buildings as massive as the iconic Castle looming over the Centre to capture, as well as elaborate, fine textures in the many quiet courtyards. Meanwhile, it blends both old and new; modern glass structures fall seamlessly between ancient sandstone edifices.

For our Gothic Edinburgh workshop, we’ll seek out the mystical qualities that make the city such a unique place for photography. Meeting in the early afternoon, we’ll make the most of the late summer sun to capture graphic silhouettes of the Scott Monument and eye-catching figures on the Royal Mile. We’ll venture off the beaten track to explore the side streets around the Old Town, which will be the perfect opportunity to try our hand at creative techniques such as multiple exposures.

One focus will be using an understanding of tonality to capture stunning black and white images that exaggerate texture and shape, capturing expressive frames rather than literal record shots of the location.

Finally, we’ll end the day with sunset views over the Edinburgh skyline and the Firth of Forth, towards the incredible Forth Bridges, learning to use longer focal lengths to compress perspective. At the end of the workshop, we’ll have discovered how to capture exciting images of a city full to the brim with ancient buildings and overflowing with gritty textures. Whether you prefer traditional street photography or if cityscape imagery is more your thing, there will be something in Edinburgh to fill up your memory cards.

This smartphone photography-friendly workshop will run from 1pm until approximately 9pm, allowing us to capture the evening light and atmospheric shots around the city after dark.
