Our Romania photography tour to Transylvania 'The Land Beyond the Forest' will take place in May 2025 with Astrid McGechan. Over the last 30 years, Romania in general, and Transylvania in particular have developed into one of the most visually and culturally interesting places to visit. Our 2025 Light & Land tour will span 9 days to allow us plenty of time to visit locations with a wealth of photographic opportunities.

Transylvania Photography Tour - The Land Beyond the Forest
Transylvania, Romania’s most famous and largest region, is usually associated with vampires and legends. But this tour will provide you with an insight into the actual reality, culture and beauty of this truly fascinating region. On the agenda, there are mountainous landscapes with mist in the valleys, medieval towns and truly interesting people, from local organic farmers to Romany coppersmiths.
Our tour will start in the charming medieval town of Sibiu. One of the major fortified towns in Transylvania, it has narrow streets, squares and defensive towers surrounding it, and the houses all have the “sleeping eye” roof windows.
We will spend time with a family of Romany coppersmiths and learn about their heritage and lifestyle. This will give us the opportunity to engage with the people and their culture. We have put together some fascinating experiences with real people, this will allow us to avoid staged photo opportunities most tourists are provided with.
Small-scale farming is very prevalent in Romania, so we will travel into the hills to spend time with shepherds working the flocks of sheep and goats. As the sun comes up, we will observe the herd of cattle in the village of Viscri as they head up to pasture after milking.
We then move on to Sirnea. Vampires are synonymous with Romania, although Daniel, our guide, does not enjoy the link with as much relish as some tour guides. Bran Castle is linked to Bram Stoker and his famous novel. High on the side of a mountain, Bran makes for a stunning image and we will spend time photographing it as it is covered by the warm evening side-light.
Thankfully, Romania made keeping bears illegal a few years ago. Most garages, circuses and some shops had a bear kept in appalling conditions. We will visit an observatory, where we will hopefully see and photograph some wild bears.
The landscape in Romania is spectacular and unlike any other country you will visit. Rural isolated farms, haystacks, lakes, rivers, mountains and rolling hills give the most incredible back drop. And visiting Transylvania and the forests in the Carpathian Mountains in May will delight us with fresh growth and spring colours.
Your tutor for this tour will be Astrid McGechan, and she is looking forward to introducing you to this wonderful country.
