Our Northumberland photography tour 'Coast and Castles' will take place in November 2024 with Bill Ward and Verity Milligan.

The ancient kingdom of Northumbria, as its name suggests, once encompassed all the land from the Humber to the Firth of Forth. It was a huge kingdom, fought over by the English, Scots, Anglo Saxons and Vikings, over many hundreds of years. This violent and romantic past has left a beguiling legacy: ruined castles and monasteries, rocky outcrops, and some of the wildest and most unspoilt beaches left anywhere on the UK mainland. It’s a photographer’s dream.

Based in the pretty and still remarkably unspoilt Northumbrian village of Bamburgh, we’ll spend three days roaming the coast with our cameras, seeking out sunrise and sunset, and everything inbetween. The castles and beaches of Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh (and if the tide’s right, Lindisfarne) will be high on the agenda, but if time and tide permits, we’ll also seek out some lesser known seascape gems, including the intriguing rocks of Spittal, Rumbling Kern, and the endless sand patterns of Budle Bay.

This is a fantastic place to photograph, and winter is the perfect season to do it, where the weather, light and conditions can often be the perfect complement to the rugged landscape. Your tutors for this tour will be Bill Ward and Verity Milligan. Bill was born and brought up in the North East, and has been coming to this stretch of coastline for over 50 years. It remains one of his favourite places to visit anywhere, with or without a camera.

In addition to Seascapes, Bill also specialises in Creative Photography (Intentional Camera Movement/Multiple Exposures), and whilst this isn’t the main focus of this particular workshop, there will be plenty of opportunities to experiment with this genre for those who are interested.
