Our 'City of Lakes' Hanoi street photography tour will take place with Mark Seymour and Flavio Bosi in November.

When it comes to the best cities for street photography in Asia, Hanoi is definitely in the top five. There are many key locations that we will visit and photograph in and around Hanoi, including temples like the Tran Quac Pagoda, museums, the Old Quarter, and some of the many local markets, including the Chang Long market, that make Hanoi a street photographer’s heaven. Losing yourself in the streets and exploring will surprise you with great scenes around every corner.

Mark and Flavio will guide you to the best areas to photograph and help you create a portfolio of images you will be proud of.

The market places are a focus for organised chaos in the city and great for candid street photography; narrow roads with stalls spilling out onto the streets, women carrying baskets of fruit, eggs and vegetables (we recommend trying the miniature pineapples, delicious), mopeds weaving their way through the crowds and stalls to deliver goods. We visit Ngocho Kham Thien market which sells clothing and textiles, fruit and vegetables, as well as live stock and Cho Dong Xuan which is the largest market with fabrics and souvenirs.

The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Complex is an important place of pilgrimage for many Vietnamese. Consisting of a traffic-free area of botanical gardens, monuments, memorials and pagodas, it is crowded by groups of Vietnamese who come from far and wide to pay their respects, offering plentiful opportunities for photographing a calmer environment.
Hoan Kiem Lake is a real favourite with people walking, exercising, having their wedding photos taken, and many street sellers at any time of day, There is an infinite range of activities going on here and the street photographer will find limitless opportunities to capture life as it happens. Vietnam is an extremely friendly place to photograph, people are warm and welcoming and don’t mind being photographed as they go about their daily life.

The Old Quarter, full of small traditional shops and characters, is another street photographer’s playground. The 36 streets of the Old Quarter are a beehive of local activity, from bicycle vendors to street food, tailored suits and jewellery stores, the variety and atmosphere of these streets show the face of the real Hanoi. The Quoc Tu Giam Park is where the Hanoians gather to play chess and other games, relax and pass the time and is close to the Temple of Literature. Here we will have an opportunity to quietly observe and document the people gathered around the games, the atmosphere of community and the friendliness of the locals.

How is the day structured?

We generally start early in the morning and stay out as long as participants like, then review our images each evening in a group session. On the first day there will be an introductory briefing about the week ahead, highlighting what we will be looking for and where we will be going each day. We will also give a small presentation on street photography and techniques we can use to produce an interesting portfolio. We will talk about moments, layering, light, working the shot, background selection and more.

This workshop is street and travel photography based, with an encouragement to shoot un-posed images containing people in a context that shows the viewer an unposed image that tells a story. We also take street portraits showing the person in context giving you an real insight into life in Vietnam.

We will be with you every step of the way, from when we meet in the morning through to critique and dinner in the evening.
