Our autumn photography tour to Moravia will take place in October and will be led by Ed Rumble and Tom Sullam.

Nestled between the Carpathian Mountains to the southeast, the Austrian Alps in the south west and the Sudetes to the north, Moravia forms one of the three historical provinces of Czechia along with Bohemia and Czech Silesia. This ancient Margraviate, once an imperial state of the Holy Roman Empire, takes its name from the Morava River, a tributary of the Danube, and occupies most of the eastern reaches of Czechia, with Brno as its capital. Today, it is home to around a quarter of Czechs. Yet, away from the main industrial conurbations of Brno and its once co-capital Olomouc, it feels sparsely populated and timeless, with its concentration on farming and viniculture.

The joy of photographing this region lies in the beautiful undulations in the landscape, overlaid with patchwork fields and cris crossed by regimented tree avenues, vineyards and the lines of the tractor and plough. We visit at the end of October when highlights and shadows cast from the low autumn sun beautifully model the rippled vistas. Wonderful golden foliage flecks the verdant green waves of winter crops and the earthy tones of fallow fields. No wonder it is often referred to as the ‘Czech Tuscany’. Further north, there are attractive windmills and tiny chapels nestled in small groves that make for pretty punctuation marks in this beautiful landscape. Medieval castle ruins atop rocky hills and outcrops provide further romance and historical context in this modern agrarian region. The cool autumn mornings are often graced with whisps of mist rising from the fertile soils, enhancing the mood and painterly nature of our images. Moravia has it all and is a wonderful, relatively undiscovered place to immerse oneself in creating some truly unique and special landscape images.

Using long telephoto lenses with focal lengths of 300-400mm will enable us to compress perspective and pick out striking compositions of form, shape and texture. We shall aim to foray into the landscape each morning and evening to take advantage of the best light, while taking time to recuperate during the middle of the day and perhaps review, discuss and process our images. We shall be reenergised in the evenings by the local hearty fare and perhaps a glass or two of the famed Czech Pilsner or some of the excellent local wines. Indeed, there will be the opportunity for a private dinner and tasting at a local vineyard, hosted by the winemaker during the tour.

Ed and Tom are experienced photographers who delight in sharing their passion and technical knowledge in a good-humoured and approachable style to help you get the most out of this tour and return with a portfolio of images of which to be proud. The tour includes an image sharing and review session with Ed and Tom on Tuesday, 24th November at 5 pm, which has proven to be a popular opportunity for guests to reconvene and receive constructive feedback on their images or simply enjoy the perspectives of fellow participants.
