Our Eastern Turkey photography tour "From Mountains to Mesopotamia" will take place in September and October 2026 and will be led by Mehmet Ozbalci.
Eastern Turkey is a land of striking contrasts and timeless beauty — a vibrant tapestry of cultures, landscapes, and some of humanity’s oldest civilizations. From the snow-capped Caucasus Mountains and the rugged Black Sea coast to the fertile plains of Mesopotamia, this is where the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers flow through the cradle of civilization. Here, ancient stone villages nestle in green valleys, dramatic hills rise to meet the sky, and sacred mountains stand watch over the centuries. It is a region rich in Greek and Armenian monasteries, biblical landmarks such as Mount Ararat, and an extraordinary mix of religions, traditions, and warm hospitality.

Eastern Turkey Photography Tour - Mountains to Mesopotamia
Our journey takes you through spectacular landscapes — soaring mountains, sweeping valleys, tranquil coastlines, and fertile plains — combined with a wealth of architectural treasures: medieval castles, ornate mosques, atmospheric monasteries, and evocative ruins. The region’s authenticity, vibrant street life, and welcoming people make it a paradise for photographers in search of both striking imagery and meaningful encounters.
Along the way, we will discover saddle makers at work, copper craftsmen hammering intricate designs, and tin plating workshops hidden in medieval-style bazaars. We’ll photograph adobe houses, bustling markets, and local people in traditional dress. Highlights include the holy rivers Tigris and Euphrates, the majestic silhouette of Mount Ararat, the haunting ruins of Ani — the ancient Armenian capital — the remote Greek Orthodox monastery of Sumela, the exquisite Armenian church of Akdamar on Lake Van, and the sacred city of Sanliurfa with its pilgrimage sites. We will also explore the awe-inspiring archaeological site of Göbeklitepe, dating back to 10,000 BC.
This is more than a photography tour — it’s an immersive journey into the mystery and magic of Eastern Turkey. Off the beaten track yet overflowing with photographic opportunities, it offers not just remarkable images, but memories and stories to last a lifetime.
