Our Hohe Tauern Photography Tour will take place in June and July 2027 and will be led by Niall Benvie.

From our base in the Southern Alps we will have easy access to one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in Europe. There are plenty of interesting locations to explore throughout the Hohe Tauern, with numerous places to stop and photograph along the way. Niall will help you get close to marmots and alpine choughs, and perhaps even ibex, as well as taking you to some of his favourite waterfalls and alpine meadows. Importantly for photographers, some of the most interesting and charismatic species are relatively easy to access, meaning less time hiking and more time photographing.

Hohe Tauern - An Alpine Photography Tour

The Hohe Tauern is the largest national park in the Alps, extending across almost 1,900 sq. km. Around two-thirds of the park is strictly protected, with no economic development permitted. More than 300 peaks rise above 3,000 metres, including Austria’s highest mountain, the Grossglockner at 3,798 metres, which is easily visible from the village where we will be based.

The landscape is wonderfully varied, with waterfalls and alpine lakes, mountain pastures and wildflower meadows. More than 300 glaciers cover parts of the park, although these are shrinking year by year. Its biological richness and ecological integrity helped the Hohe Tauern gain IUCN Category II status, recognising it as a National Park of international significance. Around 3,500 plant species and some 15,000 animal species – the majority of them invertebrates – can be found within the park.

The Alps are a rapidly changing environment, but there is still an opportunity here to experience and photograph the remarkable high-alpine landscape while also reflecting on its fragility. If conditions and luck are on our side, there may also be opportunities to photograph one of the bearded vultures reintroduced to the park from 1986 onwards, or the more numerous griffon vultures.

While the main focus of this photography tour will be landscape and close-up work, it is well worth bringing a longer lens too, ready for those wildlife encounters along the way.
