Our Rural Burgundy photography tour will take place in August 2026 and will be led by Niall Benvie.

The very name “Burgundy” conjures up images of ordered vineyards, musty “caves”, medieval villages, and small fields hemmed in by dense hedgerows. Your tutor Niall, together with his wife Charlotte, moved there permanently in 2020, and has spent a great deal of time since then learning where the most interesting photographic opportunities lie and cultivating relationships with his neighbours, natural and human.

The historical realm of the Dukes of Burgundy is now part of a much larger administrative area in central France, a diverse region that encompasses some of France’s most celebrated vineyards around Beaune, traditional bocage landscapes, the city of Dijon, and the Morvan Natural Regional Park. Niall lives in the Nièvre department, whose historical backwardness has allowed the preservation of extensive forests, small hedged fields – bocage – and plentiful wildlife.

In the adjacent Park, the hills rise a little higher, the forest is denser and the population even sparser. The huge range of butterflies, amphibians and birds is a testament to the low levels of agro-chemicals in the environment here. The landscape may lack the obvious drama of the Alps or the Pyrenees, but is lush and attractive with a powerful sense of nostalgia. It prompts a more introspective approach to your work, where you can craft your own unique images, compared to more obvious, “over-exposed” locations.

Highlights of this tour include:

  • Dereliction and decay (urbex) in a number of settings, rural and urban
  • Vineyards immediately prior to harvest
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Hospice de Beaune
  • Detail rich small towns
  • Learning some of Niall’s signature techniques
  • A good chance of foggy mornings in a traditional pastoral landscape
  • Character photography on location, including Le Moine Errant - the Wandering Monk

The climate is very agreeable, with late summer temperatures typically in the mid-high twenties with mist in the valleys when a cool night is followed by a sunny morning.

For this particular tour, you will be staying in high quality accommodation in a small, former spa-town where you will be hosted by Niall’s wife and professional cook, Charlotte. This will free you from the restrictions of hotel timetable - which can be tricky in rural France.
