Our South Coast photography tour 'from Dawn 'til Dusk' will take place in February/March 2025 with Tom Sullam and Ed Rumble.

The stretch of shoreline between Brighton in West Sussex and Rye in East Sussex encompasses some of England’s finest coastal landscapes. There are the magnificent chalk white cliffs of the Seven Sisters, Beachy Head and Birling Gap, with lighthouses punctuating the sweeping vistas.

In the early months of the year, the sun both rises and sets over the sea making dawn and dusk photography possible, with golden hour colours being reflected by the sheen on the beaches, the sea and the cliffs themselves. If conditions are right, there is the possibility for some exciting ‘big wave’ photography at a location close to our base.

The beaches further east at Pett Level and Winchelsea offer wooden sea defences which countless tides have sculpted into fascinating forms that lend themselves to experiments with long exposures as well as acting as excellent foregrounds in wider views. Rye has its famous ‘Red Roofed Hut’ but encompasses so much more with its WWII pill box and imposing sea wall. Further east, Camber Sands is characterised by rolling dunes and marram grasses, wide expanses of rippled foreshore and a wreck visible at low tide that can be photographed from the beach.

We intend to venture over the East Sussex border into Kent to spend time photographing the wonderfully surreal Dungeness with its NNR and SSSI designations, home to a plethora of wildlife and, remarkably, over 600 plant species; a third of all those found in Britain. Here, beached and decaying boats, wooden shacks and fishing paraphernalia provide endless opportunities for creative image making from abstract close-up work to wider studies, with the lighthouse and looming Power Station as backdrops. There will be plenty of time during the evenings for relaxing at our comfortable hotel where we can review our work and perhaps explore some digital processing techniques for your images, with guidance and suggestions from your knowledgeable tutors.

This 4-day, 3-night tour will stimulate your photographic creativity and provide a huge variety of exciting subject matter, whether conditions are stormy or serene. Tom and Ed are experienced photographers who have spent many hours working in this area and will make sure that we are in the right place at the right times to create some truly memorable images of this stunning part of the country.

This tour includes an oneline review / processing session on 14 March 2025 between 10am and 12noon.
