Our photography tour to the Lot and the Dordogne will take place in May 2026 and will be led by Charlie Waite and Astrid McGechan.

The Dordogne and the Lot are magical regions of France — famed for truffles, greengages, walnuts, and superb local cuisine — yet still home to hidden, little-visited enchanting places that will provide us with some glorious photography.

The upper reaches of the Dordogne River wind westward across the Department of the Lot, carving through a landscape of striking contrasts. It sweeps through broad valleys lined with tobacco, walnut, and corn plantations, then flows deep and silent beneath towering limestone cliffs. Along the way, it picks its way past jewel-like villages, their tiny riverside vegetable plots, ‘potagers’, lining its banks, and their houses seeming almost to dip their toes into the water.

Dordogne & The Lot Photography Tour - The Heart of Timeless France
High above, the stark ‘causses’ plateaux rise a thousand feet into vast skies, dotted with grazing sheep and goats whose milk becomes the delicious Cabécou cheese. Beneath, soft limestone conceals prehistoric caves, underground rivers, and dramatic gorges plunging down to secret hamlets. Our tour takes place in spring, when orchards blossom, wildflowers brighten the fields, and fresh green leaves bring the landscapes vividly to life.

For the first half of our journey, we’ll be based in Saint-Jean-Lespinasse, exploring some of the area’s finest stretches. We’ll visit the enchanting hilltop village of Loubressac, and Carrenac, where chestnut trees shade a 10th-century priory and a joyful tumble of old houses leads to the riverbank. These locations, along with the surrounding pastoral landscapes, will offer a wealth of photographic opportunities.

The second half of our tour takes us to Souillac, home to the Romanesque beauty of the 12th-century Abbaye Sainte-Marie. From here, we’ll be perfectly placed to uncover and capture the region’s many hidden gems. We’ll explore the atmospheric town of Sarlat, photographing its unique architecture and the striking countryside around it. And, with a touch of “LLL” — Light & Land Luck — we’ll seek out each location in the best possible light for truly memorable photographs.

Join Charlie and Astrid and step into a land of winding rivers, golden stone villages, and landscapes made for the camera!
