Our Heather in Bloom Peak District photography tour will take place in August 2026 and will be led by Verity Milligan and Charlotte Bellamy.

The Peak District is unquestionably one of the most beautiful parts of the UK. It’s more rugged that some of the other national parks, but that just adds to its intrigue. During late summer, the Peak District becomes even more beautiful with the blooming of heather across swathes of the heathland and edges. The vibrant purple and pinks of the heather provide the perfect foreground to the millstones and tors dotted around the landscape. However, sweeping vistas are not all the Peak District has to offer. There are plenty of woodland areas, which are full of intriguing, twisted oaks and photogenic silver birches. Our tour will provide you with ample opportunities to photograph many different environments and compositions in the Peaks.

Peak District Photography Tour - Heather in Bloom
Our tour will be led by two experienced landscape photographers, who will guide and support your exploration of the Peak District. Both Verity and Charlotte love the landscapes you will be photographing, and you can benefit from the range of experience and skills that both have to offer. While Verity loves timeless, beautifully crafted images embracing the light, colours and locations, Charlotte loves to explore using creative techniques such as Intentional Camera Movement and Multiple Exposures, bringing the feeling of movement to her images and tutoring. Whatever your preference for your image-making is, you will be encouraged to explore all possibilities.

We will spend time at locations that offer views across the Hope Valley. At sunrise, there is always the chance of mist lingering in the valley and plenty of compositional opportunities. We’ll explore the enigmatic Padley Gorge, one of Charlotte's favourite locations, allowing for opportunities to create long exposures of the flowing water and to capture the foliage that flanks the gorge on either side. This is a great location to explore the creative photographic techniques of ICM and multiple exposures, which will help you to create your unique interpretation of the location. It is possible to get relatively close to the water flowing down the valley, which offers superb creative, abstract water photography possibilities, concentrating on the movement, colour and way the light reflects on the water as it journeys down the gorge, tumbling over boulders and through small crevices.

There is much to explore in this small area. The beautiful, fairytale-like oaks, covered in green moss, gnarled and twisted, hidden millstones, and ancient stone walls are full of photographic possibilities. The bracken and birch have already started to show a little of their autumn colours.

In addition to gorges and woodlands, we will also explore various moorland areas. These often catch low cloud, which can be great for compelling imagery of the abundant heather and birches. Stanton Moor is one of Verity’s favourite places to photograph heather and woodland together. The Peak District has an abundance of ‘edges’, many of which are accessible via a short, sharp uphill walk. The effort is worth it, as some of the most intriguing formations (referred to as Tors) can be found at the top. We’ll spend time exploring these locations, especially as sunset, as they offer us sweeping views over water and valleys.

One of the most recognisable spots in the entire Peaks is Mam Tor, and for good reason. This is a cracking place for a sunrise shoot, and if the conditions are right, there’s always the possibility of a cloud inversion.

Our tour will be the perfect introduction to the Peak District for any curious photographer. If you are already familiar with this part of the UK, this tour will allow you to go deeper and really get to know this gorgeous landscape at one of the most colourful times of the year.
