Our Elan Valley Astrophotography Tour Nightscapes, Landscapes & Dark Skies will take place in May 2027 and will be led by Abby Moule.
There are places where the land falls quiet… and the sky takes over.
Set within the vast, open beauty of the Elan Valley, this tour invites you into one of the UK’s most treasured dark sky environments — a place where water, stone and starlight come together in quiet harmony. Designated an International Dark Sky Park, the valley offers skies of remarkable clarity, where the Milky Way arches high and reflections lie still beneath it. This is a landscape that rewards patience. Historic dams rise from the reservoirs with quiet strength, leading the eye into the night. The surrounding Cambrian Mountains fall into darkness, allowing the sky to take centre stage. Here, under truly dark skies, astrophotography becomes something more than technique — it becomes an experience.
Places on this tour are limited to 5.
During our tour, we will explore this unique environment through both daylight and darkness, building a complete understanding of how to plan, capture and process compelling nightscape images.
Daytime sessions are structured yet relaxed, guiding you through the fundamentals of astrophotography — from camera setup and focusing in the dark, to planning compositions and understanding the movement of the night sky. We will also work through processing techniques, helping you shape your images into finished pieces that reflect what you felt in the moment.
As evening falls, we head into the landscape. Beginning in the soft light of golden hour, we will develop compositions that carry through into the night — capturing the transition from fading colour to the first appearance of stars. From there, we will explore a range of techniques including wide-field nightscapes, constellations, star trails and, conditions allowing, the Milky Way core.
With a maximum of five participants, this is an intentionally small and supportive workshop. Whether you are completely new to astrophotography or looking to refine an established workflow, there is space here to develop at your own pace, with guidance tailored to you.
Astrophotography, by its nature, is shaped by conditions beyond our control. Clear skies cannot be guaranteed — but this does not diminish the experience. The Elan Valley offers a wealth of photographic opportunities whatever the weather, and we will adapt creatively. Light painting, long exposure work, atmospheric landscapes and in-depth processing sessions ensure that every moment remains valuable, productive and inspiring.
This tour is designed to run a little differently — shaped around the rhythms of the night sky rather than the clock. We will gradually shift into a nocturnal routine, allowing you to experience astrophotography at its most natural and unhurried. Our days begin later, with breakfast served at 11am following a restful morning, before gathering for focused classroom sessions from 1–4pm. These sessions introduce the fundamentals of astrophotography, building a clear and confident understanding of both capture and processing.
After an early supper at 6pm, we head out to witness the transition from day to night — catching sunset before travelling to our chosen dark sky location. From there, we work beneath the stars, photographing the night as it unfolds. Between approximately 10pm and 2:30am, we will focus on capturing star trails, the wider night sky and the Milky Way, returning to the hotel by 3:30am. This structure creates a fully immersive experience — one that allows you to engage deeply with both the creative and technical aspects of astrophotography, without feeling rushed.
We recommend that you bring the following equipment:
DSLR or mirrorless camera (if you don’t own one, there are a number of providers from which they can be hired)
A wide-angle lens with an aperture of f/2 or f/2.8, covering 14-24mm (full-frame equivalent) would be ideal. (f/4 is not suitable. If you don’t own such a lens, it can be hired from a number of providers)
Remote shutter release or intervalometer
Sturdy tripod
If you have any questions regarding the suitability of your current kit, please do get in touch.
To get the most from the tour, you should be comfortable walking short distances at night (less than half a mile with a torch), standing for extended periods, and adapting your sleep routine to align with the night.
This is an invitation to step into a different rhythm — to pause, connect, and reveal the night in a new light.
